Your hair requires the correct nutrients

Hair growth disorders in men and women can be an indication that the hair roots are not being effectively supplied with the necessary micronutrients.

Your hair is a sign of beauty

We all think of our hair as an important image booster, perhaps more than any other part of our bodies. The condition of our hair significantly determines identity, status and our own sense of beauty. This is one of the main reasons why excessive hair loss is such a painful experience for those affected.

Hair loss on a daily basis is actually a natural process which is determined by the hair cycle. Just like all other cells in the body, the hair is subjected to complex metabolic processes whereby the hair is renewed at regular intervals. Hair falls out daily and new hair grows daily, allowing healthy people to maintain a constant balance.

At which point is hair loss no longer natural?

The general rule is that hair loss occurs when more hair falls out than grows on a sustained basis. This is normally a drawn-out process which the sufferer may only notice after a few months or even years have passed.

A good indicator for hair loss is the amount of hair which has actually fallen out. If this amount exceeds 100 on a regular basis, there is a strong possibility that you are suffering from hair loss. A visit to the doctor can confirm this presumption. The earlier treatment begins, the earlier hair can potentially be protected from hair loss.

The most common type of hair loss is hereditary hair loss or male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). In the UK, millions of people suffer from hair loss, amounting to about 50 per cent of all men and around this many women over the age of 40. Men suffer from hair loss far more often than women and of these men, 70% already begin to lose their hair from age 25. This typically commences with the formation of ‘widow’s peaks’, which gradually become more prominent over time. Generally the hairline then recedes to the extent that after a few years, only a crown of hair still left, mostly at the back of the head and around the temples. Androgenetic hair loss usually presents itself differently in women, with hair loss instead being predominantly on the top and sides of the head. Other types of hair loss, such as diffuse hair loss, lead to an equal amount of hair being lost from all over the head.

Hair grows in cycles

Healthy hair goes through three phases:

  • Growth phase (anagen phase) 2-6 years
  • Transitional phase (catagen phase) 1-3 weeks
  • Resting phase (telogen phase) 1-3 months

Around 85% of hair is in the growth phase, which takes 2 to 6 years. During the transitional phase, hair production is discontinued so that hair can fall out when combing, brushing or washing it in the resting phase. This is a completely natural process which should only be a cause for concern when more than 100 hairs fall out on a daily basis.

There are many reasons why hair loss occurs

Many factors can contribute to the onset of hair loss.

Everything from chronic illnesses, environmental influences and genetic predispositions, to allergies and other intolerances, chemical substances, nutritional deficiencies and or poor dietary habits can, in individual cases, lead to acceleration in the hair crossing over to the resting (telogen) phase. This has a negative impact on the hair cycle and can cause hair loss.
